Thematic
I co-founded Thematic to help companies understand and act on what their customers say, at scale. This is how it began.
The story of Thematic
A question I kept hearing
After my PhD I worked with companies on language and machine learning problems. Several of them asked me the same question: can AI help us understand what is driving our NPS and customer satisfaction scores? The answer was sitting in thousands of open-ended comments that nobody had the time to read.
A prototype that worked
Using ideas from my PhD, I built a prototype that took a spreadsheet full of open-ended feedback and turned it into insights. It was good enough that several large companies became our first customers and helped us design the product around their needs.
Founding and Y Combinator
I asked my husband, Nathan Holmberg, who was then Lead Architect at Serato, to leave his job and join me, and in 2015 we founded Thematic.
In 2017 we applied to Y Combinator and got in, which taught us how to build a company around the technology.
We raised about US$1.2 million in seed funding, led by AirTree Ventures, and have been self-sustaining since.
The press covered it at the time in Idealog and Startup Daily.
Today
I'm still the CEO. Thematic works with enterprises in tech, finance, retail, telco and utilities across the US, Australia, the UK, New Zealand and Singapore. Billions of people are affected by decisions driven by insights from Thematic. We are a fully remote, international team.
